Derma Flash Review – Dermaplaning

As you all know I like my gadgets. So when OVC had the Derma Flash as a today’s special value, I had to try it. I am pleasantly surprised the Derma Flash does do what it says. To sum it up you are basically shaving you face. I have tried Nair for face, tried shaving, used one of those things that zap your face. After all that I still had that peach fuzz that you can only see when the sun is behind you. It is like fluff on your face. Well the Derma Flash takes care of that!

Derma FlasgFrom their website. DERMAFLASH is a first in class at-home, patented, safe, hygienic, exfoliating device inspired by dermaplaning, a skin treatment for the face available only in medical spas or doctor’s offices, which refinishes skin by removing dead skin cells and built up debris. The device also gently removes facial hair for smooth, luminous, and rejuvenated younger looking skin.

Applying Loose Mineral Foundation

Applying loose mineral foundation a problem for you? I hear it all the time I cannot apply loose mineral foundation or at my age I shouldn’t wear it. Well you can!! I am older and I still wear mineral foundation. You need to have a good skin care regime and do a prep before applying loose mineral foundation.

The first and foremost thing in applying loose mineral foundation is you have to get a good match. If the foundation is off, you will not feel right about the rest of your makeup. You also have to find the right formula, our has a few ingredients and go on smoothly with no tugging.  We will get into ingredients in another post. Also you have to have the correct brushes to apply the foundation. This all takes trial and error but when you find the right one, you will not go back to liquid!!  Applying loose mineral foundation is fast and easy to apply and lasts all day.

Here are a few tips on how to apply loose mineral foundation.

Tip a small amount into the lid of your container or a small dish or a minerals mate.
Take your  brush and push gently into the powder then swirl, lift, push and swirl again until the powder has disappeared from the lid. Give the brush a tap on the side of the lid to get rid of any excess powder.  The idea is not to have any sitting on the surface of the brush but pushed into the bristles.

Start applying by gently buffing the powder into your skin in small circular movements. You’ll be surprised at how far a small amount will go. Keep buffing until you have applied the powder to your whole face. I start in the center of my face and work out.
If you want to go over your face again because you feel that it needs a little extra, no problem. Just repeat the whole process.

We have a great selection of loose mineral foundation.  We also have samples under the sample section of our website.Applying Loose Mineral Foundation

Via Buff Exfoliators for Body and Face

I was sent the Via Buff Exfoliators for Body and Face to review, well I must say I do like them.  The have 4 different levels of exfoliation for different skin types and issues.
The sponges come in 4 different colors Purple for Oily Skin Level 1, Green for Normal Skin Level 2, Pink for Dry Skin Level 3, and White for Very Dry Skin Level 4

Via BuffThese sponges are different than the nylon ones found in most bath stores. The Via Buff Sponges are more dense and you use less product in them. They lather well and rinse clean.  According to their website Via Buff

Via Buff has 2 sizes of sponges one for the body and one for the face. My favorite is the one for the face. I am always telling people to exfoliate your skin. Well this makes it easy. You do not have to worry about chemicals, things in the exfoliating product that will tear your skin. With the Via Buff Facial Sponge you can do it daily or a few times a week, depending on your skin.  I use the Green one mostly and find it work very well.  I do like the body ones also, they do a good job of making the skin feel smoothwithout being too harsh.
They have a handle for reaching those hard to reach places. That is next on my list to get!!

The Via Buff Sponges do not use a lot of produce, they lather up really well.

All in all these are a good product, my only thing is I wish it had a loop on the bigger one so I can hang it to dry.

You can find these sponges at https://www.viabuff.com

There is a lot of great information on the site about them and how they work.

Would I buy them again yes I would especially the facial ones.

Makeup Primers – Over 60 & Fab

Today’s installment of Over 60 & Fabulous, we are talking Makeup Primers. As we age our skin takes on a texture of its own and if we can make it look smooth and softer, why shouldn’t we. If you haven’t been using makeup primer, then you’re really missing out. If you wear a full face of make or just use a BB cream or tinted moisturizer, makeup primers are great when trying to combat shine, create a smooth surface to apply foundation. There is a lot of debate when it come to makeup primers, if they are really needed or not. Well I love them!

One of the  benefits of using a makeup primer is it seals your pores and will help even out skin tone and texture.
Makeup Primers make your skin appear much more youthful, they smooth out fine lines. This creates a more youthful appearance and reduces the look of fine lines and wrinkle

One of the main reasons for using a makeup  primer is because it helps your makeup stay on longer. Primers help decrease sweating through the pores, which makes your makeup stay in place longer. They also act as a natural shield for dust, water and debris that might make your makeup wear off. This is my favorite reason for using one.

Makeup primers come in all kinds of formulas and textures for all skin types. You need to find one that works for your skin, and as with all makeup products always test it to make sure you are not allergic to the ingredients. I am always saying not everything work for everyone.

Makeup Primers

Fusion of Color Cosmetics offered 2 different makeup primers one is Perfect Canvas Primer, which is more of a silicone based one. It is thicker and glides on smoothly over the skin.

Sheer Perfection Makeup Primers

Our newest member to the makeup primer family is Sheer Perfection Matte Primer, this one is loaded with good things for your skin and is a thinner formula than Perfect Canvas Primer.  Sheer Perfection like Perfect Canvas Primer can be worn under makeup or alone. Sheer Perfection can also be added to your foundation if you want to sheer it out, especially if you use a cream and it is too heavy for you.
As we age if a product helps us smooth our skin and helps soften those fine lines and wrinkles and possibly have ingredients that are good for our skin, I am all for it!

Exfoliation – Over 60 & Fabulous

We are going to talk about my favorite thing exfoliation! To maximize the benefits of your moisturizing products, it is important to exfoliate two to three times per week to remove dried out and dead skin cells from your face. Exfoliation may seem quite harsh and many mature women wonder if they shoud be doing this. When you exfoliate, you are assisting the natural process of shedding dead skin cells.

The process of removing dead skin cells rejuvenates the face and allows new, healthy skin cells to grow. The process of renewing skin cells slows down as you age, so in your 60s it becomes crucial to exfoliate in order to speed this process along.

Exfoliate Your Skin Regularly.

When skin is suffocated due to build up of dead skin cells, sebum and bacteria in the new skin cells below are starved of nutrients and vitamins. Exfoliating regularly will expose them to minerals they need to become healthy.
If we don’t exfoliate, anti aging skin care products are not able to penetrate the upper skin layers and so are not as efficient as they could be.

There are a lot of exfoliation products in the market. If you are new to this, start off with something gentle like a cream exfoliator with soluble beads in it.  You can also see your Esthetician and get a deeper exfoliation  of your skin.  But what ever you do, you must do some kind of exfoliation of the skin.

Over 60 and Fabulous!!

Since I am older than mummy dust, we are going to be doing posts about being Over 60 and fabulous.  We are going to start with skin care.  Most mature women do not look like their mothers or grandmothers did at their age. We take better care of ourselves and it shows!
Mature Women

Most women in general, but particularly over 60 are concerned about the onset of an ‘aging’ and want to have “younger-looking” skin to match. Since we are bombarded with having to be this young thing  and all the photoshopped pictures that are not real.  Us Over 60 ladies are never going to have that taut, flawless, pore less, even toned skin back. So we need to concentrate on having the best looking skin we can achieve.  Any routine you choose you HAVE to continue  doing it. It is not just  1 day I will do it then not do it again for a week, it has to be a daily routine.

Don’t Try to Look “Younger” it generally makes you older. Let’s try to look the best we can
we lived life and should be proud of that!

Stay out of the Sun
Sun damage is one of the leading causes of wrinkled, spotted skin. Try to limit your sun exposure, wear hats and use sunblock. A lot of sun damage doesn’t become fully apparent until later in life.  Using sunblock and avoiding excessive sun can also reduce your risk of skin cancer.

Wash Your Face Before Sleep
Dry skin is one of the most common challenges for women over 60, because people’s skin tends to become drier as we lose oil glands when we get older. Do not use soap, as soap will pull away the natural oils from your skin.  Use a cream cleanser, oil cleanser, nothing to harsh. Toner after washing and then use a serum and moisturizer to but back moisture in the skin. Exfoliation helps our skin also, skin we do not shed dead skin as fast as out younger counterparts. Again with exfoliation, nothing harsh. Getting facials from a professional helps also.

Mature Women

When you are over 60, you must, must moisturize daily, always use  moisturizer, serum whatever works for you and above all sunblock.

Stop Smoking, aside from all the other health benefits of giving up smoking, if you are a smoker, you probably have more wrinkles than other people your same age who do not smoke.

There are so many products in the market, you need to find what works for you be it high end, natural oils, drug store brands, indie brands. Yes we carry skin care that we love and use!!

Micellar Water

Micellar Water

Make-up artists and models have used Micellar Water for decades. Now the secret’s out and Micellar Water is incredibly popular with students, moms, adventurers and entrepreneurs– anyone who needs a little short cut in their skin care routine or doesn’t have water handy when they need it

What is Micellar Water?
Micellar Water contains micelles. These little ball shaped molecules have lipophilic ends that cling to dirt and oil and hydrophilic ends that cling to water.

How does it work?
When a cotton pad is dampened with Micellar Water, the water loving ends cling to the cotton and the oil and dirt loving ends stick out from the pad waiting to cling to dirt and oil. When you wipe the Micellar Water dampened cotton pad across your face, the dirt and oil loving ends do their job by removing dirt and oil from your face leaving you with clean, fresh skin.

Part of Micellar Water’s effectiveness is in the application. Pour the Micellar Water on a cotton pad. This takes advantage of Cotton’s hydrophilic properties. The hydrophilic heads are attracted to the cotton, leaving the hydrophobic tails sticking up to trap oil, and dirt, including makeup, mascara and sebum. When applied to skin Micellar Water and cotton pads cleanse the skin by acting like a magnet, attracting and entrapping impurities without harsh rubbing or scraping.

Micellar Water can be used in place of your cleanser and toner,  we think a spritz or a cotton pad dampened with our Classic Toner or Prestige Toner can be a great addition, especially on hot, humid days when you’re feeling sticky. We like it for touching up mascara misses and for cleaning your face after being out shopping, after a run or any outdoor activity,  anywhere you want to get your face clean when there’s no water around. Fusion of Color also recommends get a smaller bottle and keep it in your desk at work or in your purse, in case you decide to go out after work.

Micellar Water’s ingredients are quite simple: Deionized Water, Witch Hazel, Water, Alcohol, Glycerin, Gluconolactone (and) Sodium Benzoate, Capric/Caprylic Triglycerides [MCT Oil], Lecithin, Decyl Glucoside. That’s it! No harsh chemicals to irritate sensitive skin.

Get the Perfect Eyebrows

The Perfect Eyebrow
Perfect Eyebrows are the most important “accessory” to and expressive part of the face. They frame the eyes which help to keep the eyes in balance. To get the perfect eyebrows they must be correctly shaped in order to open up the eyes and keep the face in proportion. Use the information below to determine proper brow shape (use a straight edge, i.e. pencil, for measure).

1. Measure from the outside of the nose, straight up through the corner of the eye to the origin of the brow. Any hair on the outside of the pencil needs to be removed. If the brow hair does not meet up to the end of the pencil, fill-in as needed.

2. Measure from the outside of the nose through the outside corner of the eye to determine the proper length of the brow. Any hair on the outside of the pencil needs to be removed. If the brow hair does not meet up to the end of the pencil, fill-in as needed.

3. Measure from the corner of the nose to the outer edge of the iris of the eye (make sure client is looking straight ahead) which will determine the high point of the arch. If the client’s arch is not in the proper place, make corrections (by hair removal or fill-in) so that the brow is more evenly balanced.

Some insights I gathered from makeup artists.

Yesterday I hosted a class for some Chicago makeup artists. Most of them do bridal work, some do commercial and some do both. After the class, we talked about the industry. Regardless of whether you go to them for advice, your bridal trial, a special event, or as a model doing print work, they all said that good skin care is the first thing you should be doing on a regular basis. No matter how good the makeup artist is, she cannot fix your skin. They can hide some imperfections and do some highlight, contouring, shadow and blush placement and apply colors that work for you that make you look stunning.

Also you need to be realistic in your expectations. If you are not a makeup wearer, don’t bring pictures of Kim K and say you want the natural look—honey, none of Kim K’s make up is natural. Granted, she looks amazing. but there is a lot of makeup on her face, and most, if not all, of her pictures are photoshopped.

Now let’s get to us mature women. Again makeup artists can only do so much– they are not magicians. (I wish they were; I would have one on retainer.) If we older gals have wrinkles, we are going to have them after the makeup is applied. Makeup artists can soften them, make them look less noticeable, hid some of our sagging skin. But don’t get mad at them if you can still see your wrinkles after the makeup application. I think we lose sight of reality: We all want to look like the models and movie stars we see in magazines, but we have to realize they are photoshopped to perfection! This not what real women look like.

We also see all these amazing face-of-the-day selfies posted on Instagram—again, not real life. Most of them are filtered, photoshopped and countless other applications are used to make the picture look perfect. We need to get back to reality and look the best we can with what we have. Makeup does help us look our best. If you are unsure how to apply it or wearing the same makeup you wore in high school or stuck in a makeup look from when we thought we looked fab, go to a professional, get advice, have your make up done, take a class on how to apply it and what to use. I think in the end you will be much happier!
