Derma Flash Review – Dermaplaning

As you all know I like my gadgets. So when OVC had the Derma Flash as a today’s special value, I had to try it. I am pleasantly surprised the Derma Flash does do what it says. To sum it up you are basically shaving you face. I have tried Nair for face, tried shaving, used one of those things that zap your face. After all that I still had that peach fuzz that you can only see when the sun is behind you. It is like fluff on your face. Well the Derma Flash takes care of that!

Derma FlasgFrom their website. DERMAFLASH is a first in class at-home, patented, safe, hygienic, exfoliating device inspired by dermaplaning, a skin treatment for the face available only in medical spas or doctor’s offices, which refinishes skin by removing dead skin cells and built up debris. The device also gently removes facial hair for smooth, luminous, and rejuvenated younger looking skin.

Exfoliation – Over 60 & Fabulous

We are going to talk about my favorite thing exfoliation! To maximize the benefits of your moisturizing products, it is important to exfoliate two to three times per week to remove dried out and dead skin cells from your face. Exfoliation may seem quite harsh and many mature women wonder if they shoud be doing this. When you exfoliate, you are assisting the natural process of shedding dead skin cells.

The process of removing dead skin cells rejuvenates the face and allows new, healthy skin cells to grow. The process of renewing skin cells slows down as you age, so in your 60s it becomes crucial to exfoliate in order to speed this process along.

Exfoliate Your Skin Regularly.

When skin is suffocated due to build up of dead skin cells, sebum and bacteria in the new skin cells below are starved of nutrients and vitamins. Exfoliating regularly will expose them to minerals they need to become healthy.
If we don’t exfoliate, anti aging skin care products are not able to penetrate the upper skin layers and so are not as efficient as they could be.

There are a lot of exfoliation products in the market. If you are new to this, start off with something gentle like a cream exfoliator with soluble beads in it.  You can also see your Esthetician and get a deeper exfoliation  of your skin.  But what ever you do, you must do some kind of exfoliation of the skin.

Facial Cleanser

We are going to talk about Fusion of Color’s Facial Cleanser. This is our next installment of Over 60 and Fabulous!   We have 3 different facial cleanser products to clean your face. You need to take off you make up daily.  Please, Please, Please do not sleep in your make up.  You must use some sort of a facial cleanser. My routine is use either the Micellar Water or Cleansing Oil first. Then use a warm wash cloth afterward. After pre cleaning I use either the Clarisonic or the Perfect Canvas Classic Cleanser.

To use the Perfect Canvas Classic Cleanser add a pump to your hand and Classic Cleanser 1massage into damp skin. It is a very creamy non foaming facial cleanser. It is not harsh and will not strip your face of it’s precious moisture. Rinse off with warm, not hot water either by splashing your face or using a warm washcloth to remover. All you former Jeune D’age Organic Skin Care lovers this is the same cleanser!! The facial cleanser contains wonderful ingredients beneficial to your skin like Aloe Barbadensis (Organic Aloe) Leaf Juice, Olea Europaea (Organic Olive) Oil, Ananas Comosus (Organic Pineapple) Fruit Extract, Carica Papaya (Organic Papaya) Fruit Extract, Carica Papaya (Organic Papaya) Leaf Extract, Cocos Nucifera (Organic Coconut) Oil, Ascorbyl Palmitate (Vitamin C Ester), Panthenol (Pro-Vitamin B5), Retinyl Palmitate (Vitamin A), Rosa Canina (Rosehip) Fruit Oil, Oenothera Biennis (Evening Primrose) Oil, Vaccinium Macrocarpon (Cranberry) Seed Oil, Daucus Carota (Carrot) Seed Oil, just to name a few! It also has an Organic content of 87%.

Facial Cleanser Micellar WaterOur newest member to the facial cleanser products is our Micellar water.  Use as a pre cleanser or for a quick makeup change or just a pick up during the day. Take a cotton pad and add some Micellar water and wipe it over your face to remover make up or just the dirt and grime from the day.  When I use this, I use it at night to take off my make up and yes mascara also. Then I follow with my usual cleansing routine. For you gals that have eyelash extension is a great product to use, does not contain oil and would be very gentle on your lashes.
Micellar Water can be used in place of your cleanser and toner, although we think a spritz of a light or a cotton pad with our Classic Toner or Prestige Toner can be a great addition, especially on hot, humid days when you’re feeling sticky. We like it for touching up mascara misses. It is a great cleanser for you face after being out and about on your bike, after a run, after any outdoor activity or exercise, anywhere you want to get your face clean when there’s no water around.
Keep it at work in your desk drawer in case you are going out after work and need to freshen up your make up and of course after that long night of fun!

Another idea for facial cleanser  is our Perfect Canvas Cleansing Oil. Believe it or not “Oil dissolves oil. One of the most basic principals of chemistry is that “like dissolves like. By using the right oils, you can cleanse your pores of dirt and bacteria naturally, gently and effectively, while replacing the dirty oil with beneficial ones extracted from natural botanicals, vegetables and fruit that heal, protect and nourish your skin. Classic Cleanser
When done properly and consistently, the Cleansing Oil can clear the skin from issues like oily skin, dry skin, sensitive skin, blackheads, whiteheads and other problems caused by mild to moderate acne–while leaving your skin healthy, balanced and properly moisturized.”
This products was made out of neccessity in my quest for an eye makeup remover. I could never find an eye makeup remover that worked. When I did find one hey would discontinue it. So we made our own. I use this almost daily as a facial cleanser before my Clarisonic or Classic Cleanser. It takes over mascara with no effort or tugging on the eyes and it feels so good when you massage it into your skin to clean it. The ingredients in the Cleansing Oil are good for your skin. Rice Bran,Apricot Oil, and Grapeseed Oil.

As I said before PLEASE clean you skin daily, your face will love you for it.

Over 60 and Fabulous!!

Since I am older than mummy dust, we are going to be doing posts about being Over 60 and fabulous.  We are going to start with skin care.  Most mature women do not look like their mothers or grandmothers did at their age. We take better care of ourselves and it shows!
Mature Women

Most women in general, but particularly over 60 are concerned about the onset of an ‘aging’ and want to have “younger-looking” skin to match. Since we are bombarded with having to be this young thing  and all the photoshopped pictures that are not real.  Us Over 60 ladies are never going to have that taut, flawless, pore less, even toned skin back. So we need to concentrate on having the best looking skin we can achieve.  Any routine you choose you HAVE to continue  doing it. It is not just  1 day I will do it then not do it again for a week, it has to be a daily routine.

Don’t Try to Look “Younger” it generally makes you older. Let’s try to look the best we can
we lived life and should be proud of that!

Stay out of the Sun
Sun damage is one of the leading causes of wrinkled, spotted skin. Try to limit your sun exposure, wear hats and use sunblock. A lot of sun damage doesn’t become fully apparent until later in life.  Using sunblock and avoiding excessive sun can also reduce your risk of skin cancer.

Wash Your Face Before Sleep
Dry skin is one of the most common challenges for women over 60, because people’s skin tends to become drier as we lose oil glands when we get older. Do not use soap, as soap will pull away the natural oils from your skin.  Use a cream cleanser, oil cleanser, nothing to harsh. Toner after washing and then use a serum and moisturizer to but back moisture in the skin. Exfoliation helps our skin also, skin we do not shed dead skin as fast as out younger counterparts. Again with exfoliation, nothing harsh. Getting facials from a professional helps also.

Mature Women

When you are over 60, you must, must moisturize daily, always use  moisturizer, serum whatever works for you and above all sunblock.

Stop Smoking, aside from all the other health benefits of giving up smoking, if you are a smoker, you probably have more wrinkles than other people your same age who do not smoke.

There are so many products in the market, you need to find what works for you be it high end, natural oils, drug store brands, indie brands. Yes we carry skin care that we love and use!!

Micellar Water

Micellar Water

Make-up artists and models have used Micellar Water for decades. Now the secret’s out and Micellar Water is incredibly popular with students, moms, adventurers and entrepreneurs– anyone who needs a little short cut in their skin care routine or doesn’t have water handy when they need it

What is Micellar Water?
Micellar Water contains micelles. These little ball shaped molecules have lipophilic ends that cling to dirt and oil and hydrophilic ends that cling to water.

How does it work?
When a cotton pad is dampened with Micellar Water, the water loving ends cling to the cotton and the oil and dirt loving ends stick out from the pad waiting to cling to dirt and oil. When you wipe the Micellar Water dampened cotton pad across your face, the dirt and oil loving ends do their job by removing dirt and oil from your face leaving you with clean, fresh skin.

Part of Micellar Water’s effectiveness is in the application. Pour the Micellar Water on a cotton pad. This takes advantage of Cotton’s hydrophilic properties. The hydrophilic heads are attracted to the cotton, leaving the hydrophobic tails sticking up to trap oil, and dirt, including makeup, mascara and sebum. When applied to skin Micellar Water and cotton pads cleanse the skin by acting like a magnet, attracting and entrapping impurities without harsh rubbing or scraping.

Micellar Water can be used in place of your cleanser and toner,  we think a spritz or a cotton pad dampened with our Classic Toner or Prestige Toner can be a great addition, especially on hot, humid days when you’re feeling sticky. We like it for touching up mascara misses and for cleaning your face after being out shopping, after a run or any outdoor activity,  anywhere you want to get your face clean when there’s no water around. Fusion of Color also recommends get a smaller bottle and keep it in your desk at work or in your purse, in case you decide to go out after work.

Micellar Water’s ingredients are quite simple: Deionized Water, Witch Hazel, Water, Alcohol, Glycerin, Gluconolactone (and) Sodium Benzoate, Capric/Caprylic Triglycerides [MCT Oil], Lecithin, Decyl Glucoside. That’s it! No harsh chemicals to irritate sensitive skin.

Some insights I gathered from makeup artists.

Yesterday I hosted a class for some Chicago makeup artists. Most of them do bridal work, some do commercial and some do both. After the class, we talked about the industry. Regardless of whether you go to them for advice, your bridal trial, a special event, or as a model doing print work, they all said that good skin care is the first thing you should be doing on a regular basis. No matter how good the makeup artist is, she cannot fix your skin. They can hide some imperfections and do some highlight, contouring, shadow and blush placement and apply colors that work for you that make you look stunning.

Also you need to be realistic in your expectations. If you are not a makeup wearer, don’t bring pictures of Kim K and say you want the natural look—honey, none of Kim K’s make up is natural. Granted, she looks amazing. but there is a lot of makeup on her face, and most, if not all, of her pictures are photoshopped.

Now let’s get to us mature women. Again makeup artists can only do so much– they are not magicians. (I wish they were; I would have one on retainer.) If we older gals have wrinkles, we are going to have them after the makeup is applied. Makeup artists can soften them, make them look less noticeable, hid some of our sagging skin. But don’t get mad at them if you can still see your wrinkles after the makeup application. I think we lose sight of reality: We all want to look like the models and movie stars we see in magazines, but we have to realize they are photoshopped to perfection! This not what real women look like.

We also see all these amazing face-of-the-day selfies posted on Instagram—again, not real life. Most of them are filtered, photoshopped and countless other applications are used to make the picture look perfect. We need to get back to reality and look the best we can with what we have. Makeup does help us look our best. If you are unsure how to apply it or wearing the same makeup you wore in high school or stuck in a makeup look from when we thought we looked fab, go to a professional, get advice, have your make up done, take a class on how to apply it and what to use. I think in the end you will be much happier!

Jojoba Oil

Technically it is not actually an oil, but rather what is called a wax ester. What makes jojoba so great is its similarity to the oil that our own skin produces, called sebum. This means that our skin knows exactly how to deal with it, absorbing it quickly and easily, and using it to create a powerful barrier against moisture-loss, as well as against allergens and irritants like dust and pollution. For those pesky dry patches, this is just the thing to soften and restore your skin to a healthy condition. All of this makes jojoba oil a great treatment if you suffer from skin conditions that are caused by a lack of moisture, like eczema. Not only that, but jojoba oil has anti-inflammatory properties, which will take down the redness caused by dryness, or by skin conditions like rosacea. It is theorized that applying jojoba to the skin can “trick” the skin into thinking it is producing enough oil, thus balancing oil production. The bottom line for acne-prone people is that jojoba oil is non-comedogenic so you can use it without fear.

You can use it as a Cuticle Oil, Apply a few drops to rough, dry cuticles at least once per day.

Benefits of jojoba oil
Provides all day moisturization – jojoba oil doesn’t evaporate like water based moisturizers can.
It is theorized, but not yet proven, that because jojoba oil is so similar to human skin oil, it can “trick” the skin into thinking it has produced enough oil and thus balance oil production.
Very stable – jojoba oil does not become rancid or lose antioxidants even after long periods of storage.
Spreads well and absorbs well.

Drawbacks of jojoba oil
At high amounts (over 6 drops) it can lend a shine to the skin. It is best to be conservative with it during the day (5-6 drops at a time). Moderate usage should actually balance oil production and reduce shine. At night before bed, feel free to use as much as you like.
